Colchester General Hospital, IRCA Unit
This £7 million project involved constructing a state-of-the-art Interventional Radiology and Cardiac Angiography (IRCA) unit at Colchester General Hospital. The facility includes three ultra-clean laboratories, negative pressure recovery bays, and advanced imaging systems, designed to enhance the speed and quality of patient care while replacing outdated infrastructure.
The project demanded extensive rerouting of mains services for two hospital wings, with only 20% of existing services accurately documented. To mitigate risks, the team transitioned to night work, carefully tracing and labelling each service before relaying data to the design team. Close daily coordination with stakeholders ensured uninterrupted hospital operations and minimised disruption.
The new IRCA unit provides a fully equipped environment for cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment procedures, improving patient recovery times and accessibility for staff. The project also contributed to the local community by offering apprentices valuable hands-on training opportunities. This successful collaboration delivered a vital clinical facility that will serve the region for years to come.
